#245 & PROCESS PHOTOS

Step one;
Toning the canvas, waiting for it to dry.

Step two;
Finding what I like best, color and shapes.

Step 3;
Building the rest of the painting around those initial marks.

The final piece. . . it was weird stopping and
shooting photos but it's interesting to look back at
the documented stages. . .

Bidding will start at 8pm PST

bidding starts at 8pm PST

I've painted this setup two more times since yesterday - I'm trying to put down as few strokes as possible but still have it read - I think it can get looser still.

I'm going to paint this same setup some more and try to remember to photograph my different stages as I go through it. Today, I tried - I shot one photo of my process, the panel after I had painted it red, and then totally forgot to stop and shoot more. . . I'm afraid that photo is not too revealing!

You know how it goes. . . I painted yesterday,
but couldn't wait another minute for the paint to dry,
had to go to sleep. . .

The eggplant on the right kind of looks like it just slid in on it's belly.
Like a seal.

I'm experimenting, some paintings will be on Ebay, other's for purchase directly through PayPal. . . There's no exact method here yet, just still trying different things out and figuring what works.

Look! A new way to purchase, safely, directly through PayPal - no ebay auction!

Other news; Sniffle. . . One of my paintings didn't get accepted into a juried show. . . truth be told, I'm not as sad as I thought I'd be. Besides, tomorrow night is book club - we read (or some of us read) a book titled - Elegance of the Hedgehog - in it there are profound thoughts, such as "Stay centered without losing your shorts," when I figure out what all this means, I'll be sure to post it. In the meantime, regrettably, the book was a French translation, so I've decided I should cook French things (oui, oui) . . . or sort of. . .blogger, Julie Powell, I am not.

This one is a little bigger, 8" x 8". The sun was out this morning so I went on location (the kitchen) and painted. The reflection on the counter was fascinating (in real life).

Bidding will start 1/17 @ 7 EST

I was asked yesterday about my process. . .

Lately, I start with a red toned piece of masonite - from there, I choose a color which seems to kind of glow in the still life - it's not always the most saturated color, it's usually a color that catches my eye and I start by putting that down with a mark.

I then go around my canvas and put in a light and then a dark and then I fill in the rest of it from there at all different times. It looks a little weird at this stage, kind of abstract, I've been told.

I do not put all my lights in at once and I do not put all my darks in at once. I have to put different colors down all over the place to see how they'll all interact.

I was also asked how I stay loose. I think it's because I do not 'draw' my painting first. I don't even typically put marks in to figure out the composition, I just start painting, based on what I'm looking at. I observe where the objects hit the page but I don't mark it's outline. When I used to put marks in or draw something first, I felt my paintings looked too 'colored in the lines.' The way I'm doing it now feel more like building.

So, today's painting - I never thought I would EVER cut up a citrus fruit and paint it, because it looked hard! But last week at Page's studio she had half a pink grapefruit out for a still life. Of course, I avoided it the whole time but at the end of the session I had worked up the courage to try it only to run out of time to finish it.

So, this morning I cut up my orange, a snack meant to be eaten while snowshoeing and gave it a try. . .

Other news; One of my favorite people gave me a bunch of beautiful fabric (read STRIPED!) from one of the best fabric places, Zimman's, in Lynn, Ma - and in case you were wondering, Lynn is also the home of Marshmallow Fluff. Is Fluff just a New England thing still or has it gone national?

Daily Painting #223

Daily Painting #222

Last night was another example of not being able to stay awake until the paint dried. . .

Other news; I saw a performance the other night called "Get Mortified," in which the adult participants read out loud from their high school diaries (or journals if you're a guy). What an original idea and they all successfully did it with a humorous slant - I can not guarantee content would be for all as you'll never know what you'll get when someone opens a page of their diary!

Today I got to paint elsewhere . . . and I left my striped blue cloth at home.

Daily Painting #220

I might need an intervention on this striped cloth soon. I love it and can't help myself and now buying fruit I think will look good with it. I tried to phase it out on #217, I had it creeping out of the view . . . but the very next day, it came right back.

Other news; I did a little blog cleaning today - some links to purchase were inactive - due to, well, me. . . thanks for your patience while I'm still learning.
