1740 Resist

Today I viewed artist William Kentridge's video The Refusal of Time at Boston's ICA. It is comprised of five simultaneous projections of dance, music, movement, drawing (and metronomes) - all dealing with themes of politics, time/death and the defiance of it all.

1737 Ocean State

still life, acrylic, 6" x 6"

sold I scooted down to Rhode Island tonight for a talk by illustrator, Mary Jane Begin. Begin has illustrated many children's books including her own version of The Wind in the Willows. Her rendition of Mr. Toad is inspired by Providence's former  Mayor Buddy Cianci - can you see a resemblance?

1736 Saltz

still life, acrylic, 6" x 6 n/a
Art critics Jerry Saltz and Roberta Smith spoke to a full auditorium tonight at Boston University. Saltz opened the discussion by stating, "Art first, all else will follow." Saltz and Smith are also husband and wife and seldom (if at all) hold a talk together. Saltz writes for the New York Magazine and Smith writes for the New York Times. Saltz believes in as much engagement and conversation as possible with his readers (and beyond - he was a critic on the television show "Work of Art"). He welcomes direct comments online to his articles and responds back creating an interactive dialogue. Contrarily, Smith admitted to having more of a thin skin when it comes to direct confrontation about her writing. However, she does Tweet, I'm off to follow her now!

Other News: Below are photos of a 30" x 70" commission I recently finished. Before doing the painting I painted a quarter scale sketch for the couple's approval. Due to the unusual size, I stretched my own canvas using heavy duty stretcher bars from Twin Brooks Stretchers. The stretchers are handcrafted in Maine and feature a mechanical locking system which is so much easier to assemble than banging (and cursing) together the traditional wedge stretchers.
